The Washington State Department of Agriculture and Washington State Potato Commission have been notified that they have been awarded $53,600 to conduct seminars in selected Central American markets.
Partnering with the departments of agriculture and potato commissions of Oregon and Idaho , the potato interests will use the funding to conduct on-site technical seminars in selected Central American markets to inform processors and importers about the qualities of Northwest chipping and fresh tablestock potatoes.
“The use of matching fund dollars from USDA has given the Northwest potato commissions an excellent means to provide technical seminars to help end-users gain a better understanding of our quality product,” said Matt Harris Director of Trade for the Washington State Potato Commission.
Harris notes that the rolling implementation of the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) is opening Central American countries to increased trade opportunities as tariffs are lowered in each respective country.
The grants are part of 27 matching grants totaling $1,333,530 that support agricultural market research and demonstration projects awarded to 25 states. “These grants will be used to explore new and innovative approaches to marketing U.S. food and agricultural products and to improve the efficiency and performance of our marketing system,” said Agriculture Deputy Secretary Chuck Conner.
